C1 vs Wakefield Wildcats
Calderdale 1 lost 38-54 to Wakefield Wildcats. The squad was stretched a bit thin but this result still puts them above Wildcats in the Superleague
C2 vs Morrisons 1
A close start to the first half with both teams holding possession and trading points with each centre pass. Lisa Lund WA created some lovely feeds into the circle, working together with Laura Kennedy GA (this weeks player of the match) and Gail Gledhill GS who, even under the pressure of a super league player in the oppositions defence, sot with confidence and accuracy. Calderdale were just behind 10-9.
In the second quarter there was a change to defence with great team work by Louise Stones GD and Lorelle Donaldson GK putting pressure on attack in the circle. Assisting on the wing was Hannah Yates WD with some great interceptions to assist turnover.
The third quarter saw great leadership by captain Sarah Heaton C who pushed the team to dig deep, again assisting with various turnovers, however Morrisons won this quarter 47-27.
The final quarter and the final push with both teams fighting hard, another change in defence with Jasmin Douglas WD pushing hard and assisting with turnovers, also a debut for new player assisting Calderdale 2 was Amelia Weston WA who showed great potential and skill on court. Final score 58-37 with Calderdale achieving over half score to top of the league Morrisons.
C3 vs Morrisons 2
This was a lack lustre performance from C3, although the final score of 58 to 31 in Morrisons favour was somewhat flattering to them.
Morrisons took full advantage of their tall shooters and used them effectively against a determined C3 defence.
C3 starting line up of Williamson, Harrison, Hollingworth, Hall, Hinch, Foster and Godfrey started well but as the opposition shooters gained in confidence, the gap between the teams started to grow.
Second quarter changes, with Brearley coming on at WD could not stem the tide and the opposition continued to pull away.
Further positional changes made by Captain Kay Hollingworth could not affect the outcome and despite effective shooting from player of the match Liz Harrison the final result was a disappointing loss for C3
C4 vs Yorkshire Gems
Calderdale 4ths showed good form against joint top of the 5th division, Yorkshire Gems, losing by a nail bitingly narrow margin of 3 goals, 31-34.
The speedy Wing Attack Amelia Weston coupled well with her energetic mid court partner Liv Reynolds to fire balls at pace up court supplying fellow shooters, but Gems’ tall defence broke down their feeds into the circle and turned over any missed shots.
Gems increased their lead to 8 goals by half time, but the Calderdale youngsters weren’t beaten yet & attacked the last 2 quarters with confidence. Lowrie Roberts leading from the front slotted away goals calming her teammate’s nerves, but it was fellow shooter, Harriet Grace, who took player of the match for her consistency under the post at range, against a tall defence.
Calderdale won the last 2 quarters and put Gems under a massive about of pressure, but it wasn’t enough to claw back Gems’ lead.
The pieces of the jigsaw are slotting together nicely for this newly formed team of youngster competing for the first time in the adult West Yorkshire league
