C1 vs Alliance
Calderdale Firsts travelled to Lighthouse to play Alliance for the second time this season. Alliance displayed strength and confidence of the bat, quickly stretching out a lead but Calderdale retained composure and brought the score back to level by the end of the first 15 – first quarter score 14-14.
The second quarter saw Lorelle Donaldson come on at GK and Calderdale, with renewed vigour, starting to push ahead and take the lead. Effective defensive work across the team broke down Alliances flow and enabled Jess Brearley to regularly take interceptions and the shooters Megan Kennedy and Roxy Rothery to capitalise on this extra possession.
Into the second half, the defensive trio of Donaldson, Sophia Boothroyd and Becky Wood applied yet more pressure to Alliance’s attack challenging every feed, forcing errors and taking yet more possession from their opponents.
The final quarter saw Louise Stones coming on at GK and Calderdale holding strong and maintaining their advantage with some impressive feeds from both Jessica Brearley and Caroline Baldwin.
Final score Calderdale take the win 48-42 with Megan Kennedy taking Player of the Match for her flawless shooting throughout
C2 vs Rothwell
With a strong and successful performance last week Calderdale 2 were looking to take the momentum of the win into their fixture against Rothwell.
Kim Walters at centre and Lorrelle Donaldson & Jess Maloney in defence worked tirelessly to take interceptions in the first quarter but, despite the extra possession, a strong Rothwell defensive approach made it difficult for Calderdale to convert them into goals and settle into their game and were left behind on score at the close of the quarter.
With a few tactical changes in the second quarter, Calderdale improved the quality of their attack finding a more confident approach and reduced the gap to three goals behind their opponents.
The 2 teams traded points throughout the remainder of the game and despite Calderdale’s best effort, they were unable to pull ahead and the game finished as a 31-36 loss.
C3 game against Portland Sports B was cancelled due to issues with venue. Awaiting re-arranged fixture
C4 vs Leeds Lightning 2
Calderdale 4ths romped home a 59-34 victory over Leeds Lightning 2nds in the 5th Division of the West Yorkshire league.
From the off this young Calderdale side of 15-17 year olds were hungry for interceptions, with turnovers from defenders Zuzanna Nawocka and Ella Cooper pushing Calderdale into an early 4-0 lead. This gave attackers Amelia Weston, Bethan Hirst and Harriet Grace confidence to execute their set plays with precision, leaving Leeds Lightning behind the pace.
But it was a stand-out performance by Player of the Match Ellie Cardiss, who showed her versatility mid-court to relentlessly hunt down the ball, create turnover, and then deliver it at pace to her shooters.
The end result was never in doubt, only the size of the goal difference, which may prove crucial towards the end of the season. Calderdale now move up a slot to 5th place in the league
C1 vs Wakefield Phoenix 1
C1 lost 42-58 in a tough fought battle against a strong Wakefield side. Player of the match was awarded to Becky Wood.
C2 vs Ellis

C3 vs Wakefield Phoenix 2
Calderdale Thirds made a solid start to their away match against Wakefield Phoenix 2 with shooters, Liz Harrison and Pauline Williamson on fine form in the first quarter, scoring from all parts of the circle, despite the massive height advantage of the Wakefield defence. It was goal for goal in that quarter which ended with 8 goals each.
The second quarter was Calderdale's best as they upped their game with centre court players Kay Hollingworth, Jo Hall and Mollie Brearley controlling the ball down court and stretching their lead by 18 goals to 15.
Wakefield fought back in the third quarter and pulled back once again by drawing the quarter 21-21.
Calderdale gave their all but the final quarter proved to be their downfall, and even the great defensive play and interceptions from Hannah Godfrey and Lyndsey Foster was not enough as the Wakefield shooters suddenly found their form and confidence, taking advantage of Calderdale's basic errors.
Player of the match was awarded jointly to Liz Harrison and the versatile Lucianne Hinch. After such a close and exciting match throughout, Calderdale were disappointed to come away without the 3 much needed points to cement their place in the third division, losing by 25 goals to 33.
C4 vs Milford 3
Calderdale 4ths stride to victory after a shaky start, beating 4th place Milford 3rds 45-32, in the West Yorkshire league 5th Division.
Calderdale had a nervous start, making unforced errors allowing Milford to take an 8-2 lead. But shooters Harriet Grace and Bethan Hirst found their stride and steadied the ship, pulling back to a 1 goal deficit at the end of the 1st quarter.
Ellie Cardiss showed her versatility moving to Centre, and combined well with Wing Deference Ella Cooper to put Milfords attack under pressure with their many tips and interceptions. Calderdale pulled into a 22-18 lead by half time.
Amelia Weston and Liv Reynolds couldn’t be touched mid court as they moved the ball down court at pace, and then supported Grace and Hirst with quick 1:2s around the circle edge.
Calderdale finished strongly with Zuzanna Nawrocka on her debut in a Calderdale dress, working hard in the defensive circle alongside Captain Sue Seymour to restrict Milford to just 4 goals in the final quarter.
Players of the match were jointly Grace, Cardiss and Seymour
