Calderdale 1s beat Shipley Swifts 1 this weekend in an intense match at Park Lane High School in Halifax.
Calderdale got off to a flying start in the first quarter with their defence, Sophia Boothroyd and Amy Hunt-Brown turning over possession in Shipley’s attacking circle. In attack, possession was quickly converted into goals, where
Calderdale utilised their combinations of Kim Walters, Roxy Rothery and Megan Kennedy to keep Shipley’s defence on the back foot. Core strength in the shooting circle made interceptions increasingly difficult and the attacking circle was fed with speed and accuracy by Jess Brearley and Carolyne Baldwin.
Calderdale kept their lead throughout the entire game, aided particularly by Emma Bullough (player of the match) who maintained pressure in centre-court, forcing errors from Shipley.
In the final quarter, an injury forced Calderdale into making a change in the defensive circle. Claire Hunt-Brown stepped up to the challenge and gave an amazing last minute performance to ensure that the Hunt-Brown duo didn’t conceive many goals.
Gritty determination and a positive team spirit from all players led to a superb defeat - Calderdale 54 - 36 Shipley.
Calderdale 2 faced Shipley Swifts 2 who were still to get a win in the Premier League.
The first quarter of the game was dominated by Calderdale with strong defence Clare Hunt-Brown and Jasmin Douglas new to the second team this season. Late in the first quarter Calderdale had an injury to goal keeper Clare Hunt-Brown seeing Jess Moloney making her debut to the second team as the replacement. Turning balls over in the centre third and getting them down to the shooting pair Megan Kennedy and Paula Hird, Calderdale established a 1st quarter lead of 16-8.
In the second quarter the lead was stretched further with centre court players Team Captain Sarah Heaton, Mollie Griffiths, Hannah Yates who received POM for her superb interceptions, and Gail Gledhill at goal attack, finishing at half time 27-15.
In the third quarter Jo Hall took the position of WA and instantly added strength to the Calderdale side, but Shipley Swifts applied pressure. Despite this Calderdale showed composure finishing the third quarter 40-26.
Changes where made in the fourth quarter seeing Megan Kennedy coming off and Paula Hird and Gail Gledhill taking the positions of GS and GA. Shipley Swifts added pressure in the defensive circle making it difficult for the ball to be played in to the shooting pair. Calderdale had to keep centre court tight passing the ball round until it could be fed into the shooting circle finishing the game 46-35.
Calderdale 3 were without three key shooters for their game with Rothwell 2s
Calderdale started strongly with Emily Woodworth and Pia Rattigan, in the absence of regular shooters, working well in the attacking circle against a physical Rothwell defence.
Rothwell were dogged and fought hard to keep Calderdale’s lead slender. Defensively Calderdale were very strong with Hannah Godfrey (GK), Lyndsey Foster (GD) and Gill Coldwell (WD), on top of their games. The first quarter ended with Calderdale narrowly in the lead.
In the second quarter Captain Kay Hollingworth brought on key feeder of the game, Jo Hall who soon started feeding some great balls in to Calderdale’s attacking circle. Molly Brearley played a big part in pinning Rothwell in the centre third. With Hall and Hollingworth, Calderdale’s centre court was strong and with Gill Coldwell and Lyndsey Foster fighting hard in a very physical defensive circle, Calderdale ended the second quarter with a slender one goal lead (18-17).
Rothwell then upped their game and produced a strong third quarter to open up the goal advantage. Lyndsey (Zib) Foster and Pia Rattigan were joint players of the match but despite a very strong defensive performance, tiredness took it’s toll on Calderdale who were eventually beaten 38-31.
