C2 vs Leeds Lightning
Calder 2 were stretched to the limit to keep up with top of the league Leeds Lightning throughout their match on Saturday.
Kim Roy and Gail Gledhill (Player of the Match) formed a brilliant combination in the shooting circle ably assisted by accurate feeds in from Lisa Lund and Leanne Smith. By half time Calder 2 were just two goals behind.
Rosie Baldwin made her debut for the second team and worked hard with Lou Stones in defence to provide turnover opportunities to level the score to 35 all in the third quarter. However, Leeds Lightning were stronger overall and managed to secure a win in the final few minutes (50-48).
C3 vs Shipley Swifts 3
Now 5 games into the season without a win under their belts, Calder 3 stepped onto the court with determination and confidence that they could end their losing streak.
Calder wasted no time stamping their authority on the game with Liz Harrison and Pauline Williamson providing consistently accuratley shooting in the circle and doubling their opponents score by the end of the quarter – 16 goals to 8.
Coach Greenhough was keen to keep up the momentum with subtle changes in player positions throughout the game – keeping the opposition on their toes. The second quarter saw Calder stretch their lead further with outstanding feeding of the ball up court from Olivia Baldwin and great link play between Lucianne Hinch, Baldwin and Jo Hall. Halftime score 33-12
Into the 3rd quarter and the defensive pairing of Hannah Godfrey and Zib Forest continued to pressurise their shooters keeping them to their lowest quarter goal tally all game and further stretching Calderdales lead to 49-19 by the end of the quarter.
Into the final 15 and Greenough took opportunity to mix players up, taking full advantage of the commanding lead they had established. A steady finish to the game with both teams trading points and Calder maintaining the goal difference to the end – final score 66 to 34.
C4 vs WAKEFIELD WILDCATS 6
Calderdale 4s were hoping to continue their winning streak and came on court with a speed and determination that left the opposition standing.
They took control throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters, with the score at 25 goals to 30 in favour of Calderdale. The whole team linked up well with the attackers feeding some great balls into the shooting duo of Olivia Reynolds and Harriet Grace – Grace, who rarely missed, earned the Player of the Match award as a result.
But Wakefield were not going to let Calderdale have their own way and upped their game in the last quarter with a tremendous fight back and ultimately took the game Wildcats 39 to Calderdale’s 36 in an exciting finish.
