Calderdale 1 had a tough game this week against a very physical Bradford Premier. It was always going to be a difficult game with 4 first teamers missing, but they stepped up and were positive about the game.
Despite being 8-1 down after the first 5 minutes, they clawed it back to be two goals down at the end of the first quarter. After coach Phil Greenough's quarter time team talk Calderdale knew what they then needed to do to turn it around.
Some great circle defence from Sue Seymour and 3rd teamer player of the match Emily Woodworth saw tips and interceptions, but Calderdale struggled to get the ball down in to attack so we were still down by two goals at half time (25-23).
In the third quarter captain Sophia Boothroyd and Jess Brearley were working hard to get the ball into the attacking third with the back up of 3rd teamer Jo Hall and Seymour. But Bradfords defence got tighter and there shooters weren't missing. At the end of the third quarter the gap increased to 4 goals (37-33).
The final quarter was tough trying to maintain the consistency of play and convert turn overs into goals. With Calderdale only having 7 players struggled to keep up their energy levels. Unfortunately Bradford pulled away with the result 52-44.
Calderdale 2 are in the Premier Division relegation zone together with their opponents Rothwell 1, who are working their way back up the league table.
Calderdale started strong with Gail Gledhill WA doing some lovely feeds into the circle to new player Izzy Ross GA and Paula Hird GS, shooting some lovely balls into the net. Attack was definitely on point with Calderdale taking the lead 12-8.
In the second quarter Calderdale's defence kicked it up a notch with great team work by Jasmin Douglas GD and Louse Stones GK putting pressure on Rothewell's attack in the circle. With a change over the support from Jessica Maloney WD and her interceptions, Calderdale managed to keep the lead 26-17.
The third quarter saw great leadership by captain Sarah Heaton who pushed the team and assisted with various turnovers leaving Calderdale staying strong at 35-28.
The final quarter saw both teams fighting hard for victory. Birthday girl and this weeks player of the match Pia Rattigan WA came out with some lovely interceptions and feeds into the circle. Final Score with Calderdale 2 taking victory 45-38.
A determined Calderdale 3 played Pennine Weavers (formerly Caboodles), missing several key players called up to the first team. They knew it would be a tough one against an experienced opposition.
The first quarter could not have been closer with little separating each team, but Pennine edged into the lead ending the quarter by 8 goals to 7.
Calderdale began their fight back in the second and third quarters breaking the opposition's defence with some exceptional shooting from eventual player of the match, veteran Pauline Williamson, and Natalie Connor. Calderdale edged further forward spurred on by the solid defence of Hannah Godfrey, Lyndsey Foster and Gill Coldwell, the latter providing consistent and effective support down court allowing centre court players, Kay Hollingworth and Liz Harrison to feed accurately to the shooters. The score at the end of the third quarter was 29-26 in Calderdale's favour.
In the last quarter, Pennine upped their game, capitalising on Calderdale's errors and continued to gain ground with the match ending in a thrilling 38-38 draw.
